The Celebration Party of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the Founder of Shito-ryu

This year’s National Championships was held as a memorial event of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the founder of Shito-ryu. On August 28, the 1st day of the Championships, the Celebration Party of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the Founder of Shito-ryu ws held at Hotel Osaka Bay Tower, after all preliminary competitions were completed.

The Celebration Party of the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, the Founder of Shito-ryu was held successfully from 6:30 pm on the 28th, at Hotel Osaka Bay Tower, as receiving many guests and related people.

Before opening the ceremony, the MC explained the brief history of the founder: the circumstances of learning Karate from Sensei Anko Itosu of Shurite and Sensei Kanryo Higaonna of Nahate, the hardships Sensei Mabuni had when he moved into Osaka from Okinawa to spread Karatedo, and the story of taking the first letter of both teachers’ names to create Shitoryu.

Vice President of Shitokai, Mr. Toshiyuki Imanishi gave a few words in the beginning of the ceremony and expressed his appreciation of the guests. Soke Kenwa Mabuni then greeted and talked about the memories of the founder or his father. Subsequently Vice Soke Kenyu Mabuni, the grand son of the founder stood up to say a few words to express his gratitude to the audience.

He also mentioned, “Soke is 93 years old this year. In spite of his great age, he went to France to teach in August,” which made the audience surprised. And Mr. Hiroshi Murata made an address of thanks and praised the achievements of the founder.

As a representative of the guests, Mr. Hitoshi Mimoto, Vice President of Japan Karatedo Federation congratulated the founder on his achievements and the development of Shito-kai. Mr. Ryuichiro Tomoyose, Chairman of the Council at Kinki region, Japan Karatedo Federation introduced the story that the founder directly taught him Karate when he was a boy. Then, Mr. Haruyoshi Yamada, President of West Japan Workers Karatedo Federation gave a few words, mentioned about the relationship between Shito-kai and All Japan Workers Karatedo Federation, and congratulated.

Chatanyara Kushanku was performed by a group of three - Yuka Tokioka, Rimi Kajikawa and Chisa Tsuruyama as an attraction and the audience was thrilled by their wonderful performance.

Following the toast proposed by Mr. Hirofumi Mizoguchi, Vice Chairman of Shito-kai, the participants had a pleasant talk about Karate at their tables.

Since the latter half of the Championships was scheduled on the next day, Chairman Genzo Iwata gave a closing address at 9:30pm as scheduled. The event was closed with the pray for the future development of Shito-kai as well as the Karate world.
